Hometown:
· Born in Coy Alabama, the Wilcox County native grew up in the Pebble Hill Community. Matthews resides in District Three.
Education:
· A 1966 Camden Academy graduate, Matthews served the nation during the Vietnam War. After two years in Vietnam,
· he worked as a police office and continued his studies in criminal justice at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan.
Professional Background:
· U.S. Army Service, Vietnam Veteran [1968-1969]; Retired from Detroit Police Department 1999 after 26 years of service; Served as Chief of for the City of Camden [2001-2004]; Former Bank loan officer.

Civic Contributions:
· Wilcox Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Member of the Industrial Development Board (IDA), Wilcox County Friends of the River, a group concerned with improving water quality and cleaning-up the Alabama River. Serves as a member of the Board of Director for BAMA Kids. Serves on Governor Riley’s Black Belt Commission on Infrastructure and area #6 Workforce Development Taskforce
Accomplishments:
· Worked diligently to bring Work Development Training to Wilcox County.
· Working on ways to attract more tourism to Wilcox County and the Black Belt. Supporting efforts to use a data base system to improve accountability and efficiency in county government.
· Completed Auburn University Leadership Wilcox County Class.
· Is currently serving as vice-chairman of Wilcox County Commission
